Only 11% of Ukrainians opposed to more films dubbed in Ukrainian – poll

The quality of Ukrainian dubbing is better than Russian

Only some 11% of Ukraine citizens are opposed to more films dubbed in Ukrainian.

These are the results of the poll, carried out by First Movies International company in Ukraine in December of 2007, on the order of Sony and Disney companies.

According to the results of the poll, when asked how they would feel towards the introduction of more films dubbed in Ukrainian, a fifth of Ukrainian respondents (some 19%) thought it would be necessary, whereas additional some 24% welcomed it. Some 30% were neutral, some 16% were slightly against the introduction of more Ukrainian films, and a relatively small 11% thought it to be completely unnecessary.

When asked to specify likes about the dubbing of Pirates of the Caribbean III, some 77% of those respondents who saw the Ukrainian dubbed version mentioned a good quality of dubbing, compared to some 68% who saw the Russian version. Besides, some 68% of those respondents who saw the Ukrainian version of Ratatouille mentioned a good quality of dubbing, compared to 56% of those who saw the Russian dubbed version.

To gauge the effect from the introduction of Ukraine dubbed films on the cinema-going frequency, respondents in Kyiv and Lviv were asked to specify whether there had been any changes in their cinema-going frequency since the introduction of Ukrainian dubbed films at the cinema.

Some 68% in Lviv and some 54% in Kyiv saw no changes in their cinema-going frequency. Around a fifth in both locations stated to go more to the cinema than before (some 22% in Lviv and some 19% in Kyiv). However, whereas more home viewing ands less frequent visits to the cinema did not exceed the 6% mark in Lviv, some 15% in Kyiv decreased their visits to the cinema following the introduction of Ukrainian dubbed films, with a further some 11% stating to watch more films at home on DVD or video.

The poll was carried out by First Movies International company in four regions of Ukraine (Lviv, Kyiv, Odessa, and Kharkiv). 808 Ukrainian citizens aged from 14 to 49 years old were polled.
