Police have detained several armed men with explosives not far from the house of presidential candidate Volodymyr Zelensky in a villa community outside Kyiv.

The exact number of the detainees and their identity are not disclosed because of an ongoing investigation, the TV news service TSN said.

The armed men had weapons and ammunition of various types and caliber.

The operation was conducted by Ukraine's special task police with the use of weapons.

No one was hurt, the news service said.

The police say they are confident that the detainees were preparing more than one crime, yet the Interior Ministry does not comment whether it was an attempt on Zelensky's life.

At the same time, Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko wrote on Facebook that the preliminary data say the said group had plotted a hit job against a Lviv-based mob boss "as a retaliation for him ordering an organized assassination attempt on August 29, 2016, of a Lviv businessman Bohdan K," therefore denying the allegation that the incident is related to a presidential candidate.

Several criminal proceedings will simultaneously be opened after the detention of the suspects. Investigators say this may indicate there were preparations for a serious crime or several crimes.
