A COVID-19 vaccine is expected before 2021 / REUTERS

The World Health Organization predicts that a coronavirus vaccine may be ready by the end of this year.

This forecast was given by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a WHO Executive Board meeting, according to Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty's Ukrainian service.

"We will need vaccines and there is hope that by the end of this year we may have a vaccine. There is hope," he said in closing remarks.

Coronavirus vaccine: Latest developments

  • By the end of 2021, the WHO plans to produce 2 billion doses of coronavirus vaccines. Sixty-seven higher income economies and 92 lower income economies have officially joined in the COVAX Facility.
  • The WHO does not exclude that 2 million people will fall victim to COVID-19.
  • Earlier, the UN said that the coronavirus pandemic was out of control. This was due to a lack of global preparedness, interaction, unity and solidarity among countries.
