Nadia Savchenko's first day in Ukraine's parliament

Ukrainian pilot and MP Nadia Savchenko, who returned home last week after nearly two years in Russian captivity, is attending her first parliament meeting on Tuesday, May 31.

Savchenko comes to the meeting in advance. She is sitting on a bench outside the parliament's building, smoking and talking with journalists.

"I'm lawmaker Nadia Savchenko, and I'm back and about to start work," she begins her speech with these words.

She also thanks "all the Ukrainians, who have been fighting for her."

She finishes her speech with singing the anthem of Ukraine.

At the end of her address to lawmakers, Savchenko removes her portrait from the parliament's rostrum and replaces it with a banner depicting the portraits of Ukrainian political prisoners, who are still held in Russian captivity.
