A farm in Kyiv region's Bila Tserkva district has been forced to euthanize almost 4,000 pigs amid a sudden outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) to avoid the spread of a disease that does not affect humans, while poses great risk to pig population.
The report by the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection says at least two pigs at the farm died of the ASF, as per veterinary post-mortem examination.
The farm premises, as well as the entire village hosting the business and a number of neighboring settlements, were put on quarantine on July 23.
The hazard site has been cordoned off to only allow access of specialized personnel engaged in emergency response efforts.

At present, specialists from the State Food and Consumer Service are taking further measures to ensure isolation and prevent the spread of the deadly animal disease.
As UNIAN reported earlier, citing the "Stop ASF" project, more than 520 ASF cases have been registered in Ukraine since 2012.
UNIAN memo. African swine fever (Montgomery disease) is a contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs. The disease bears no threat to humans. The virus is transmitted by direct contact between sick and healthy animals, through pork products, and also transmitted by ticks and mechanically (by vehicles during transportation of people and animals). There are no vaccines against the virus. Almost all infected pigs die. The virus is destroyed by heating to extremely high temperatures.
