The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ukraine's parliament, has backed a bill to authorize the issuance of environmental certificates for imported cars at the customs across the country, not at border crossing points.

Bill No. 5470-d to amend Article 2 of the law of Ukraine "On Certain Issues of Importation into the Customs Territory of Ukraine and Registration of Vehicles" was backed by 235 MPs with the required minimum being 226 votes.

"Certificates of compliance with environmental standards for vehicles, both new and used ones, will not be asked during customs clearance on Ukraine's border. Instead, such certificates will be required for customs registration at the customs inside the country," she said.

At the same time, Yuzhanina recommended putting the bill to the vote with amendments with regard to ambulance cars that do not comply with the current environmental standards and imported to the Ukrainian territory as humanitarian aid. She asked to make an exception for such vehicles.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the Ukrainian customs in 2017 registered 80,500 new vehicles, which was 27% up from 2016. The number of used cars that underwent customs clearance in 2017 tripled, to 72,900 vehicles.
