Ukraine triples grain exports in seven years

Ukraine saw record high maize shipments abroad last year.

Ukraine exported 41.8 million tonnes of grain last year, which tripled from 2010 and grew by 4% from 2016.

"Although wheat exports exceeded supplies in 2010 by 3.6 times, they remained almost at the level of 2016 and amounted to 17.3 million tonnes last year," Deputy Director of National Scientific Center "Institute of Agrarian Economics" Mykola Puhachev told the agriculture news portal Latifundist.

"Sorghum exports increased considerably, by 1.6 times from 2016. Its shipments abroad totaled 148,300 tonnes last year, which was almost four times higher than in 2010. Barley exports remained almost at the level of the previous year, 4.9 million tonnes, while rye exports increased by more than four times from 2016, to 25,000 tonnes last year," the expert said.

At the same time, Ukraine saw record high maize supplies abroad last year, to 19.4 million tonnes, which was 12.2% more than in 2016 and 4.8 times higher than in 2010.

Ukraine's Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food forecasts grain exports from Ukraine in the 2017/2018 marketing year will be 41 million tonnes.
