The State Road Agency of Ukraine, Ukravtodor, says Poland has started preparatory work on the construction of the S12 highway stretch from the town of Piaski, located near Lublin, to the border with Ukraine (Dorohusk checkpoint).

"Poland plans to build the S12 highway to the Ukrainian border with access to our Yahodyn checkpoint. The new highway will have two lanes in each direction," Ukravtodor said in a statement, referring to the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways of Poland (GDDKiA).

The Ukrainian side, in turn, plans to reconstruct in the coming years the M-07 highway between Kovel and Yahodyn.

The construction is also envisaged of a bypass road around the city of Chełm. Once completed, the section will be connected to S17 Lublin-Warsaw.

It should be noted that the S12 highway on the Polish-Ukrainian border is connected with one of the major Ukrainian highways, M-07, which passes through Kovel, Sarny, and Korosten all the way to Kyiv.

As was earlier reported, in September, Poland would begin the construction of a fence on the border with Ukraine and Belarus in order to prevent migration of boars. The 1,000 km-long fence will be erected along the country's eastern border.
