Ukraine in the first quarter of 2018 compared with the same period last year reduced imports of natural gas by 56.9%, to 1.8 billion cubic meters.

"In January-March 2018, gas imports from Europe compared to the first quarter of 2017 decreased by more than 50% due to significant gas reserves accumulated  in underground storage facilities due to the resource of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine and other customers before the start of the heating season," reports the press service of the state-owned operator of Ukraine's gas transmission system, Ukrtransgaz.

According to the company, the largest volumes of gas were imported via the Slovak gas transmission corridor, that is, 1.3 billion cubic meters, and also from Poland and Hungary (0.2 and 0.3 billion cubic meters, respectively).

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine in late November 2015 refused to purchase natural gas from the Russian Gazprom. In 2015, the country doubled imports of natural gas from Europe compared with 2014 - up to 10.3 bcm, while reducing by 56.5% the purchase of hydrocarbons from Russia. In 2016, Ukraine imported 11.1 bcm of gas only from the EU, and in 2017 – a total of 13.9 bcm worth $3.228 billion.
