Hryvnia strengthens by 1.2% to dollar in April – NBU

The hryvnia has strengthened against the dollar by 6.5% since the beginning of the year.

The Ukrainian hryvnia has strengthened against the dollar by 6.5% since the start of the year, according to the Macroeconomic and Monetary Review for April 2018 posted by the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) on its website.

The regulator associates the strengthening of the national currency with fundamental factors, including a UAH 11.3 billion ($431.3 million) decrease in the liquidity of the banking system in March 2018 as a result of government operations, after the growth of the banking system liquidity in February.

Moreover, the external environment was favorable for Ukraine in March 2018, while of the currency supply from the population continued to grow.

UNIAN memo. Ukraine's national currency strengthened against the U.S. dollar by 5.4% in the first quarter of 2018, according to the NBU official rate.

The state budget of Ukraine for 2018 assumes the average annual rate of the hryvnia at the level of about UAH 29.3 to the dollar, while the rate at the year-end is seen at about UAH 30.1 to the dollar.

Most Ukrainian businesses forecast the hryvnia exchange rate against the U.S. dollar in the range of UAH 28-31 within the next 12 months, according to an NBU survey.

The hryvnia's historic low against the U.S. dollar was at UAH 30.01 per U.S. dollar in February 2015.
