National Bank names banknotes forged most often

US$100 banknotes accounted for 94% of the total amount of counterfeit U.S. dollar bills withdrawn from circulation in Ukraine.

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has named banknotes of UAH 500 and $100 denomination as those forged most often.

Almost 10,500 counterfeit hryvnia banknotes worth UAH 3.6 million (US$137,562) were withdrawn from circulation in 2017. At the same time, counterfeit 500-hryvnia 2006 bills accounted for 61% of the said banknotes, according to the NBU annual report for 2017.

At the same time, the share of the counterfeit U.S. dollar banknotes in the total amount of counterfeit foreign currency bills removed from circulation was at 77.6%. Banknotes of the $100 denomination accounted for 94% of the total amount of counterfeit U.S. dollar banknotes withdrawn from circulation.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the total number of counterfeit hryvnia banknotes in 2016 remained almost at the level of 2015, that is 2.8 forged bills per 1 million legit ones, while the number of counterfeit 500-hryvnia banknotes increased. In general, among counterfeit bills in the national currency in 2016 were banknotes of the UAH 500, 50, 100 and 200 denomination.
