Ukrainian state-run railways operator JSC Ukrzaliznytsia and the Hungarian state railways plan to launch a direct railway service between Mukachevo and Budapest by the end of summer, based on a new EU-type railway (1,435 mm).

"By the end of the summer, that is in two months, Mukachevo-Budapest train, running on EU-type railway, is to be launched, as promised. To this end, we are starting the construction of a special railway platform in 500 m from the Mukachevo railway station. It will be adjacent to a 1,435 mm European standard gauge railway. Now we are coordinating the project while developing train traffic schedule and tariffs," Acting CEO of Ukrzaliznytsia Yevhen Kravtsov wrote on Facebook.

"In addition to the new platform, we will put in order about 40 km of the EU-type railway. We also plan direct railway services on a narrow line with Slovakia, the Czech Republic and other EU countries," he added.

According to Kravtsov, it will take six hours for the new train to get to the Hungarian capital.

"The 400-kilometer route will run through the Hungarian cities of Debrecen and Nyiregyhaza," he wrote.

As UNIAN reported, Ukrzaliznytsia earlier stated that it planned together with the Hungarian state railways to launch a direct railway service between Mukachevo and Budapest.

Kravtsov said then that the price of tickets would be democratic: no more than UAH 700 (US$26.5) for the second class, and about UAH 1,000 ($37.8) for the first class.
