Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman says the regulation of food prices in Ukraine has never been effective and has not allowed to halt consumer inflation.

"Prices have been regulated since the 90's. So, did they stop? No, they always grew. What does it mean? The regulation has never been effective. The only effective way is to increase the number of livestock and saturate the market with Ukrainian products," he said during a Q&A hour in the Verkhovna Rada on June 22.

To this end, the government has launched financial support programs for farming, the official added.

As UNIAN reported earlier, a pilot project on the abolition of state regulation of food prices was operating in Ukraine from October 1, 2016 to January 1, 2017.

In late December 2016, Groysman said the experiment with the abolition of state regulations had been justified and did not lead to inflation acceleration.

After that, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine decided to abolish the state regulation of food prices on July 1, 2017.
