Ukraine mulls waiving ban on privatization of defense companies

At the moment, the Ukrainian legislation severely restricts the sale of state-owned enterprises of the country's defense industry.

The National Security and Defense Council together with the Cabinet of Ministers and the Verkhovna Rada are working on the possibility to allow at a legislative level the privatization of Ukrainian state-owned defense enterprises, NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov told a briefing on Tuesday.

"I'd like to inform you that we are actively working along with the Cabinet of Ministers and the Verkhovna Rada, in particular, with its relevant committees, to remove any restrictions on the privatization of state defense enterprises, as well as to invest, attract foreign investment to these enterprises," Turchynov said, according to Ukrayinska Pravda.

The official added that at the moment, this is being severely restricted the current Ukrainian legislation.

"It is important that these measures to liberalize the foreign economic operations of enterprises of the Ukrainian defense industry will on the one hand significantly strengthen their positions, prospects for development, competitiveness and efficiency of activities, and on the other hand – not weaken expert control," the NSDC secretary said.

According to Turchynov, the operations of all company in the said market will meet all international agreements signed by Ukraine. He added that the measures will save budgetary funds, as well as make the defensive segment more transparent and effective.
