Ukraine reduces gas imports by almost 40% in H1 2018

The largest volume of gas was imported from Slovakia.

Ukraine in January-June 2018 (H1) reduced natural gas imports by 36.7%, or 2.553 billion cubic meters (bcm) year-over-year (y-o-y), to 4.408 bcm.

Over the period under review, Ukraine imported gas from the European Union countries alone, the state-run gas transport system operator Ukrtransgaz said.

In particular, 2.98 bcm of gas was imported via the Slovak gas transport corridor, 0.35 bcm and 1.08 bcm were shipped from Poland and Hungary, respectively.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine in late November 2015 refused to purchase natural gas from Russia's Gazprom. In total, the country doubled gas imports from Europe in 2015 from 2014, to 10.3 bcm, simultaneously reducing the purchase of hydrocarbons from Russia by 56.5%.

In 2016, Ukraine imported 11.1 bcm of gas from Europe alone, gas imports in 2017 totaled 13.9 bcm. Natural gas shipments from abroad in 2017 were estimated at US$3.228 billion.
