Ukraine in the first six months of 2018 (H1), imported 8,400 tonnes of pork, which was 8 times up year-over-year (y-o-y).

"In January-June this year, Ukraine received 8,400 tonnes of fresh, chilled and frozen pork [against 924 tonnes in the past year] with an aggregate value of $15.4 million," the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders reported.

The major pork suppliers remain the same: shipments from Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark accounted for 56% of the country's pork imports, it said.

"Of course, imported pork enters our domestic market mainly from Europe. But there are also other players. Since last year, Canadian pork [in particular, frozen pork shoulder, ham, and their cuts] have been supplied to Ukraine. In January-April, these parts of meat were imported to Ukraine at $1.77-2/kg, in May – at $1.68/kg, and last month their customs value fluctuated between $1.66/kg and 1.68/kg. Even more expensive pork was supplied from Canada [in May and June] – at $2.39/kg and $2.59/kg," the association's analytical department added.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the price of pork may rise by 10% before the end of 2018, according to experts.
