Smelyansky has filed a resignation letter, dated August 31, so that the government has time to make a balanced decision.
Ihor Smelyansky, who since April 2016 has headed the public joint-stock company (PJSC) Ukrposhta, Ukraine's state-owned postal services provider, is set to resign.
"I have actually filed a resignation letter, dated August 31, so that the government has time to think things over and decide either to prolong the contract with me on adequate terms, or terminate it, which is okay, too. There will be enough time for the transition period so that I can hand over my keys, office, and table," he told journalists on Thursday, July 12.
According to Smelyansky, he put forward the following conditions for him to be ready to extend the contract: an opportunity to form his own team, guarantees of political independence, a possibility of implementing radical "shock" reforms, and a clear strategy.

"The government should publicly announce that it supports my strategy. I gave them the right to choose," Smelyansky said. "Entering the political season, it is important that I see the approval of my vision of the company's development," he stressed.
The official added that he would continue to work as usual until August 31.
He also says that Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan is supporting his further tenure as Ukrposhta CEO.
As UNIAN reported earlier, the Cabinet last week approved Smelyansky as Ukrposhta CEO were he had worked as acting CEO.
UNIAN memo. Ukrposhta is the national operator of postal services under the authority of the Infrastructure Ministry. The company offers more than 50 types of services through over 11,000 offices throughout Ukraine. The company employs about 76,000 people.
