Russian politician explains why EU could block Nord Stream 2

Borovoi suggests that the pipe is today a tool for Germany to combat tariffs that the U.S. intends to introduce to balance out competition in the European U.S. markets.

Russian opposition politician Konstantin Borovoi says the EU states could block the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline if they accept Washington's radical stance.

"Germany is closer to the United States because in many ways it rather depends on the U.S. than on Russia. And the recent discussion on tariffs for metals [aluminum and steel] really concerns them. The Germans trade much more with the United States, and having a market with them is more reliable. Therefore, choosing between Russia and the United States, Germany is not willing to lose markets in the U.S.," the politician said as reported by Apostrophe, a Ukrainian news outlet.

According to Borovoi, if the European countries decide to support radical statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, "sanity will prevail" and the construction of the Russian gas pipeline may be blocked.

Borovoi suggests that Nord Stream 2 is now a tool for Germany to combat tariffs that the U.S. intends to introduce to balance out competition in the European U.S. markets.

"It will be very beneficial for Ukraine. It's not some kind of talk about privileges that are also needed, but serious and more mature talks with Europeans about their interests and threats that the EU has not considered up to now," Borovoi stressed.

"Northern Stream 2 is the Kremlin's instrument of hybrid war. And they must start thinking how not to hand it over to Putin," the opposition politician concluded.
