Ukraine gathers almost half of this year's grain harvest

Ukrainian agrarians had harvested 28.6 million tonnes of grain from an area of 8.5 million hectares by August 6, which was almost half of the grain yield planned this year.

In particular, the farmers harvested 21.5 million tonnes of winter wheat on an area of 5.8 million hectares, or 91% of the forecast; while spring wheat was harvested from 59,400 hectares and its yield was 184,900 tonnes, or 30% to the forecast, the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry's press service has said.

Some 3 million tonnes of winter barley was harvested from 857,000 hectares, or 98% of the forecast; the yield of spring barley was 2.9 million tonnes, which was harvested from 1.2 million hectares, or 73% of the forecast.

The harvest of peas totaled 705,000 tonnes, harvested from 9,000 hectares (90% of the forecast).

The average yield of grain was 3.38 tonnes per hectare.

Also, farmers harvested 218,000 tonnes of rye from 82,000 hectares (55% of the forecast) with a yield of 2.67 tonnes per hectare and 93,000 tonnes of oats from 44,000 hectares (22%) with a yield of 2.12 tonnes per hectare.

In addition, 2.5 million tonnes of winter rapeseeds were harvested from 959,600 hectares (99%) with a yield of 2.61 tonnes per hectare and 41,000 tonnes of spring rapeseeds from 20,000 hectares (30%) with a yield of 2.09 tonnes per hectare.

As UNIAN reported, the ministry retained its forecast of the grain harvest in 2018 at 60 million tonnes. At the same time, the forecast for the yield of wheat was increased on August 3 from 23 million to 24 million tonnes. Experts also forecast an increase in the grain yield up to 65 million tonnes at the expense of late cereals due to prolonged rains in July.
