Ukrainian farmers thresh almost 29 mln tonnes of grain as of Aug 6

Ukrainian agrarians threshed 28.6 million tonnes of grain from 8.5 million hectares as of August 6.

In particular, 21.5 million tonnes of winter wheat was harvested from an area of 5.8 million hectares (91% of the target), 184,900 tonnes of spring wheat from 59,400 hectares (30%), 3 million tonnes of winter barley from 857,000 hectares (98%), 2.9 million tonnes of spring barley from 1.2 million hectares (73%), and 705,000 tonnes of peas from 92,000 hectares (90%), according to the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry's press service.

The average yield of cereals is estimated at 3.38 tonnes per hectare, it said.

In addition, agrarians harvested 218,000 tonnes of rye from 82,000 hectares, which accounted for 55% of the projected figure with a yield of 2.67 tonnes per hectare, and 93,000 tonnes of oats from 44,000 hectares (22% of the target) with a yield of 2.12 tonnes per hectare.

Ukrainian farmers also threshed 2.5 million tonnes of winter rapeseed from an area of 959,600 hectares with a yield of 2.61 tonnes per hectare (99% of the target) and 41,000 tonnes of spring rapeseed from 20,000 hectares with a yield of 2.09 tonnes per hectare (30%).

As UNIAN reported earlier, the ministry retained its forecast for grain yield in the 2018-2019 marketing year at 60 million tonnes.

At the same time, the agrarian ministry on August 3 increased its forecast for wheat harvest from 23 million tonnes to 24 million tonnes.

Experts also say grain yield may rose to 64.5-65 million tonnes due to an increase in the harvest of late cereals caused by prolonged rains in July.

Ukraine harvested 61.3 million tonnes of cereals and leguminous crops in 2017, which was 7.3% down from 2016, according to the State Statistics Service.
