Ukraine's central bank spends half a billion dollars to save hryvnia

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) spent US$526.6 million in the past three weeks, from July 30 to August 17, on interventions on the interbank forex market to smooth out excessive fluctuations.

The regulator sold US$311.6 million on the market from July 30 to August 10, the NBU said on its website.

Given these figures, the purchase of foreign currency by the NBU has so far exceeded its sale by $702.1 million since the beginning of the year.

UNIAN memo. Ukraine's international reserves as of August 1, 2018, amounted to US$17.749 billion, which is 5.6% lower than the figure at the beginning of the year. The National Bank in 2017 bought $1.3 billion more on the interbank foreign exchange market than it sold.
