Tax officers have already conducted planned inspections of 102 timber exporters. They are expected to check 60 relevant businesses before the end of this month, the Ukrainian online newspaper ZN.ua reported on August 18.

The SFS plans to focus on operations with non-residents, related services and rent for the use of forest resources in order to determine the reality of wood processing operations in Ukraine.

Ukraine's tax officers jointly with the competent authorities of other countries intend to check the volume of export operations and correctness of exported timber classification.

"The work should be coordinated with the relevant units to combat laundering of proceeds from crime," the SFS said.

As was earlier reported, the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's partiament, had adopted the bill to amend legislation on the preservation of Ukrainian forests and prevention of the illegal exports of unprocessed timber.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on July 23 vetoed the document and sent it back to parliament with his proposals.
