The hryvnia, Ukraine's national currency, devalued against the U.S. dollar by 5.7% in August.

The weakening of the hryvnia against the euro has amounted to 5.8% for this period, according to the macroeconomic and monetary survey of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) for August.

The regulator explained that the turbulence intensified in the currency market in August, since the demand from importers of energy resources and consumer goods had traditionally increased on the eve of the autumn period. Ffinancial instability in Turkey and concerns about its spread to other markets became an additional psychological factor.

It is also reported that, to reduce the intensity of exchange rate fluctuations, the National Bank is increasing its presence in the foreign exchange market. In August, the NBU sold $651 million more than it bought.

From the beginning of the year, the purchase of foreign currency was over the sale by $549 million.
