Ukrainian hryvnia celebrates 22nd anniversary

Today, the country has in circulation cash hryvnia worth UAH 373.6 billion.

Ukraine's national currency, the hryvnia, is celebrating its 22nd anniversary after the country completed its monetary reform on September 2, 1996.

As reported on the website of the National Bank of Ukraine, today, the country has in circulation cash hryvnia worth UAH 373.6 billion, including coins worth UAH 2.1 billion (13 billion pieces), and banknotes worth UAH 371.4 billion (2.9 billion pieces).

According to the NBU, the total number of banknotes per capita is 68, while the number of coins is 293.

UNIAN memo. On September 2, 1996 in Ukraine, the monetary reform was completed, replacing the so-called "karbovantsi" with a new currency, hryvnia. The exchange was carried out September 2-16, 1996. During this period, the hryvnia and karbovantsi operated in parallel lines.

After September 16, 1996, the hryvnia became the only means of payment in the territory of Ukraine.
