If the European Union decides to end daylight saving time, Ukraine could follow suit, according to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

The ministry noted that Ukraine has embarked on a policy of European integration, which means that it must implement European legislation.

"If the EU adopts a decision to abolish the transition to summer time, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade will apply to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on the possibility of making appropriate changes," the ministry said.

The officials say the ministry has no due diligence report on the actual reduction of power consumption as a result of changing the clocks.

As reported earlier, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that the European Union could cancel switches to summer and winter time.

He noted that an appropriate decision would be made following an online poll, where the majority of the surveyed stood in favor of the abolition daylight saving time. The proposal was supported by 80% of 4.6 million respondents.

In Ukraine, clock changes began in 1981 along with the rest of the republics of the former USSR.
