The first U.S.-made locomotive dubbed "Tryzub" ("Trident") built by GE Transportation has arrived in Ukraine.

"The first General Electric locomotive has arrived at the port of Chornomorsk," Acting CEO of Ukrainian national railways company PJSC Ukrzaliznytsia Yevhen Kravtsov wrote on Facebook late on Monday, September 10. "Tomorrow morning we will put the locomotive on the rails."

The second locomotive is expected to arrive on September 25.

As was earlier reported, GE Transportation, a division of General Electric, sent the first of 30 GE TE33AC locomotives to Ukraine early in August. It was built at GE Transportation's Erie plant, PA.

"It has been travelling for more than a month – first by rail, then it crossed the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea," Kravtsov wrote.

It will undergo customs clearance and will head to the Kriukov-on-Dnieper railway station, where it will be equipped with needed devices.

A $1 billion deal between Ukrzaliznytsia and GE Transportation provides for modernization and upgrading of rolling stock.

At the first stage, 30 diesel locomotives will be supplied to Ukraine with 10% local content rule. The price of each locomotive is US$4.7 million. In general, the contracted amount for the first batch is US$140 million.

New locomotives will be serviced by the Melitopol depot, Zaporizhia region.
