Sweden's IKEA has reportedly signed an agreement with Kyiv-based Ocean Mall near the Lybidska subway station to lease about 4,000 square meters.

"They have rented about 4,000 square meters at the Ocean Mall, which is to open next year near the Ocean Plaza," the liga.net news outlet quoted the director of a consulting company who spoke on condition of anonymity.

IKEA is said to be holding talks with other shopping malls in Kyiv, as it plans to develop city stores whose area is between 3,500-5,000 square meters. After the company opens some retail outlets in the Ukrainian capital, it is to enter the regions.

This is IKEA's third attempt to enter the Ukrainian market. The company planned to open its first shopping center next to Kyiv's Boryspil highway in 2006. But Kyiv authorities did not allocate a 70-hectare plot to it as the land was part of the local forest. IKEA made a second attempt in 2009, when it acquired a 60-hectare plot in Odesa region. But a year later, it announced withdrawal from the Ukrainian market without giving any explanation. IKEA planned to invest from US$1.5 billion to US$2 billion in its projects, according to various estimates.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the Swedish-founded furniture giant IKEA Group headquartered in Delft (the Netherlands) has already begun recruiting employees for its first store in Ukraine. In particular, the company has announced job openings for IT specialists, designers, specialists in sales, procurement, and logistics, as well as administrative personnel.
