Ukraine's humanitarian envoy to the Trilateral Contact Group on the Donbas settlement, Iryna Gerashchenko, says Ukraine demands that Russia and its proxies in occupied Donbas return 30,000 railcars to the Ukrainian state-owned railway company Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways), including 85 railcars that were purchased for the credit funds of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
"I'd like to remind you of a terrible fact that as a result the aggression, Russia has stolen over 30,000 railcars from Ukrzaliznytsia that remained in the occupied territory. The issue remains the key one, including during the meetings of the economic group in Minsk. Moreover, we demand that the Russian Federation and Russian-led militants return these cars to Ukraine. In particular, 85 brand new railcars purchased before 2014 for the EBRD loan, which Ukraine still has to pay for," she said in Parliament on October 3.
Gerashchenko says it is necessary to take measures as soon as possible, since Russia is selling the stolen property via its websites.
"We also appeal to Ukraine's competent law enforcement agencies to open an investigation into the theft. Imagine there are announcements on the Russian and separatists' websites with proposals: 'Buy railcars stolen in Ukraine.' They, like marauders, sell stolen property," she added.
