Poland's largest state-owned oil and gas company PGNiG has challenged the decision of the European Commission on the antitrust case of Russia's gas monopoly Gazprom.

"PGNiG stepped on the legal path against the European Commission, challenging the EU Court decision on the deal with Gazprom," the Polish agency PAP reports, referring to its sources, the Ukrainian media outlet Europeiska Pravda wrote on October 16.

The European Commission has been studying Gazprom's business transactions in Europe for seven years, accusing the Russian concern of obstructing competition and over-pricing gas supplies to Eastern Europe. However, Gazprom denied the charges.

In May 2018, the European Commission issued a decision on the case. The EU did not penalize the Russian concern. However, it imposed on it a number of obligations to allow unhindered gas supplies to Central and Eastern Europe at competitive prices.

Poland and other countries affected by Gazprom's monopolistic practices expressed discontent over the fact that the Russian giant had not been punished. The fine could reach 10% of the monopoly's annual turnover.
