Ukraine builds, repairs 6,500 km of roads over 3 years – PM Groysman

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has laid UAH 56 billion ($2 billion) for road construction in the draft Budget 2019.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman says 6,500 km of roads has been repaired and/or built across the country over the past three years.

"I have repeatedly said that we will make good roads in Ukraine. Over the past three years, about 6,500 km of roads has been repaired and built. Noteworthy, 900 km in 2016, some 2,100 km in 2017, and about 3,500 km in 2018," he wrote on Tweeter on October 22.

As UNIAN reported earlier, in 2018, the country's road sector will receive about UAH 47 billion (US$1.7 billion) through the guaranteed state financing and additional sources. Road construction funding in Ukraine in 2017 amounted to about UAH 20 billion ($713.3 million).

Ukraine's Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan earlier said that about 4,000-5,000 km of roads of state importance might be repaired in Ukraine given the approval of the national budget for 2018 with UAH 40 billion ($1.4 billion) allocated for the road industry.

Since January 1, 2018, the State Road Agency of Ukraine, Ukravtodor, has been responsible for a mere 50,000 km of roads, while the remaining 120,000 km are under control of local authorities with guaranteed financing from the Road Fund in the amount of 35% of its proceeds.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has included UAH 56 billion ($2 billion) for road construction in the draft Budget 2019. In particular, UAH 17.7 billion ($631 million) will be allocated for roads of local importance, while UAH 2.5 billion for strengthening security on the roads.
