Ukraine puts up for sale notorious Russian-flagged Nord vessel

Crew members' personal property will be handed over to the ARMA.

Ukraine's state-run enterprise SETAM (OpenMarket) has put up for sale the earlier seized the Nord fishing vessel flying a Russian flag at a starting price of UAH 1.6 million (US$56,838).

The Asset Recovery and Management Agency (ARMA) handed over to SETAM, which is controlled by the Ukrainian Justice Ministry, for sale the earlier detained Russia-flagged, Crimea-registered fishing vessel Nord, the OpenMarket's press center said in a statement on October 24.

According to the head of ARMA legal department, Andriy Potiomkin, Russia had literally extorted the vessel amid the illegal Crimea annexation.

"She [the vessel] was detained and an appropriate criminal investigation was initiated and transferred to the Asset Recovery and Management Agency. Having carried out the appropriate measures to ensure the safety of property pending the investigation, it turned out that the storage costs and maintenance are too large.

In accordance with the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the vessel shall be sold before the decision on its confiscation is taken. The funds from the sale will be transferred to the ARMA account in the state bank and kept there until the court's ruling is handed down," the press service quoted Potiomkin as saying.

As reported, anyone can apply for the lot within 15 days, pay a guarantee fee and participate in the auction scheduled for November 7.

The vessel was built in the town of Azov (Russia's Rostov region) in 1989. It is 23.6 m long and 6.5 m wide, powered by a 165 kW main engine. Its net capacity is 32 tonnes.

It is noted that all personal property of crew members will be handed over as well.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukrainian border guards on March 25 detained in the Sea of Azov the Nord fishing vessel flying a Russian flag. The Ukrainian Prosecutor's Office of Crimea opened a criminal case into the fact that the vessel had arrived from the Russian annexed city of Kerch, a port officially closed down by the Ukrainian government.

In response, the Department of the FSB of Russia in Crimea opened a criminal case against Ukrainian border guards who detained the ship. Ukraine deemed the act as "pressure on the State Border Service of Ukraine."

On October 19, The Ukrainian Prosecutor's Office of Crimea handed over the detained Nord vessel to the Asset Recovery and Management Agency (ARMA).

UNIAN memo. ARMA is a special governmental body, authorized to formulate and implement state policy in the sphere of tracing, finding of assets that are subject to seizure and that are aimed to be seized, as well as management of seized assets in criminal proceedings.

The state-owned SETAM has been operating since October 26, 2015. Prior to that, SETAM's electronic trading system was operating experimentally in three regions from May 1, 2014. In September 2017, the enterprise changed the name of its e-trading platform for OpenMarket.
