Ukraine imports $307 mln worth of nuclear fuel in Jan-Aug

Ukraine in January-August 2018 imported fuel assemblies, used as fuel at nuclear power plants, worth $307 million.

As reported by the State Statistics Service, during the reporting period, 183.5 tonnes of nuclear fuel was purchased from Russia, totaling $208.32 million (in the general structure of purchases, the share of Russian fuel stood at 67.85%), and from Sweden – at 140.95 tonnes, worth $98.7 million.

The share of supplies from Sweden was 32.15%.

As UNIAN reported earlier, within the framework of nuclear fuel sources diversification and reduction of the country's dependence on a single source, the Russian company TVEL, Ukraine's state-owned Energoatom in April 2014 concluded an agreement with Westinghouse, a company produces fuel at its plant in Sweden.

At the end of January 2018, Energoatom and Westinghouse extended their contract for supplies until 2025. To date, Swedish fuel has been successfully put into Zaporizhia and Yuzhnoukrainska NPPs.
