Polish Ambassador to Ukraine, Jan Pieklo, is confident that it is in the interests of both Kyiv and Warsaw not to allow the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project.

“Now we have a problem, which is Nord Stream 2. It is in the interests of Ukraine, Poland and other countries not to allow the implementation of the project,” Pieklo said during a conference in Kyiv Wednesday, according to an UNIAN correspondent.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on April 5, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine called on the international community to make every effort to ban the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

On November 1, German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that she was not as critical of the Nord Stream 2 project as Kyiv leaders, and spoke in favor of preserving guarantees of gas transit via Ukraine.

Russian Gazprom earlier announced that after the construction of Nord Stream 2, Ukraine's transit might be completely stopped, while the Ukrainian side would have to justify the "economic viability of a new gas transit contract."

UNIAN memo. The Nord Stream 2 project involves the construction of two strings of a gas pipeline running from the Russian coast via the Baltic Sea to Germany. The construction completion of a 1,220-km long pipeline worth EUR 9.5 billion with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters a year is scheduled for late 2019.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko earlier called on European partners to abandon the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project. "Nord Stream 2 is a 'Trojan horse' of the Kremlin against European energy and, ultimately, geopolitical security," the president said.
