Ukrainian lawmakers fall short of half a million dollars in salaries in Jan-Sept for being absent

Parubiy says he is making every effort for the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, to work efficiently.

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy says Ukrainian lawmakers who missed parliamentary meetings in January-September 2018 have not been paid more than UAH 15 million (US$537,634) in salaries for the period of absence from work.

The official adds he is making every effort for the Verkhovna Rada to work efficiently and for the MPs to be present in the session hall, according to an UNIAN correspondent.

Parubiy says the parliamentarians cannot be forced to attend the plenary sessions. However, non-payment of salaries is the only effective mechanism to address the problem of their absence at the meetings.

In particular, the measure helped the budget to save almost UAH 16 million over the said period, he added.
