Ukraine invests record high US$1.79 bln in road infrastructure in 2018

Some 45 bridges are to be repaired by the end of this year.

Ukraine has injected a record high investment of UAH 50 billion, or US$1.79 billion, in road infrastructure in 2018.

"This year, we've invested UAH 32.6 billion [US$1.16 billion] from the Road Fund in road construction. In fact, this is almost UAH 50 billion [US$1.79 billion] from all other sources of financing, which is a record amount for Ukraine. It would have been impossible without the support of parties in parliament, without the support of Ukraine's political elite," the ZN.ua news outlet quoted Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan as saying amid a tour of Zhytomyr region to inspect road construction.

Budget subsidies to repair local roads and municipal property in Zhytomyr are planned at UAH 617.2 million, or US$22 million, he said. Also, a section of the M06 Kiev-Chop highway in the region is being overhauled; the budget of the project is EUR 42.3 million. The overhaul began on June 20, 2018 and is scheduled to be completed in June 2020. Most of the repairs are scheduled for the 2019 construction season.

As UNIAN reported, 4,500 bridges need major repairs in Ukraine. Until 2022, Ukraine plans to spend $1 billion on repairing bridges. Some 45 bridges are to be repaired by the end of the year. In Kyiv, two bridges across the Dnipro – the bridge named after Yevhen Paton and the Metro Bridge, as well as the Shuliavka overpass need urgent repairs.
