Ukraine boosts exports of frozen fish by almost 70% in Jan-Sept

Moldova, Germany, Hungary, Azerbaijan, Romania, Georgia, and Belarus were key buyers.

The State Agency of Fisheries of Ukraine says Ukrainian producers in January-September 2018 boosted exports of frozen fish by 66.5%, to US$1 million.

"In the nine months of 2018, Ukraine exported 454 tonnes of frozen fish worth $1 million. Growth in physical terms was 21% year-over-year, while the exports grew by 66.5% in monetary terms," the agency's press service said in a statement.

Moldova was the largest buyer in 2018, it imported 112 tonnes of frozen fish worth $196,000. Other key importers were Germany with 103 tonnes worth $334,000, Hungary with $194,000, Azerbaijan with $94,000, Romania with $45,000, Georgia with $56,000, and Belarus with $26,000.

Over the period under review, the main staples for import were trout (54 tonnes worth $259,000), carp (29 tonnes worth $84,000), herring (11.6 tonnes worth $13,000), and other species (319 tonnes worth $534,000).

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine in 2017 increased shipments of fish and seafood by 26.5%, to 10,600 tonnes abroad.

A total of 94,200 tonnes of fish and seafood were caught in 2017, which was 6.6% up from 2016, the agency said.

The production of fish and foodstuffs made of it in Ukraine in 2017 totaled 63,300 tonnes, which was 1.1% up from 2016.
