Chief Operating Officer of National Joint-Stock Company (NJSC) Naftogaz of Ukraine Yuriy Vitrenko says that a court in New York has agreed with the Ukrainian company's demands regarding Russia's gas giant Gazprom.

"The court in New York has agreed with our demands regarding Gazprom. This is only the first step in the United States," he wrote on Facebook on Wednesday evening. "We are still waiting for court decisions in Texas."

NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine has managed to take the first step to engage U.S. courts in a dispute with Russia's Gazprom to recover $2.6 billion from it under an award by the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC), Ukraine's news outlet Ukrayinska Pravda said.

Vitrenko promised to disclose more details later.

As Russia's media reported earlier, Naftogaz on December 6 filed lawsuits in the courts of the North and South districts of Texas against the U.S.-based division of Gazprom Marketing &Trading, which is part of the Gazprom group, and the leading auditor of oil and gas reserves, consulting company DeGolyer & MacNaughton. Both defendants are registered in Texas.

NJSC Naftogaz insists they should be obliged to provide information and access to documents that will allow the Ukrainian company to file a new lawsuit against Gazprom in the Netherlands.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Gazprom late in February 2018 lost a lawsuit against Naftogaz in the Stockholm arbitration on a transit contract, according to which the Russian company must pay the Ukrainian side $4.6 billion. At the same time, taking into account the decision of the arbitration on the other contract for gas supplies, the final amount of settlements between the companies amounts to $2.6 billion in favor of Naftogaz.
