Only the vehicles brought to Ukraine between January 1, 2015, and November 25, 2018, when the new rules came into force, were subject to legalization, the SFS's press service said on January 3.

Almost 14,000 vehicles were on Ukraine's customs territory in violation of the country's Customs Code. Their owners voluntarily paid fines worth about UAH 119 million, or US$4.3 million (UAH 8,500/$307 for each car), the SFS press service said.

Citizens were most active in terms of customs clearance of their vehicles in the city of Kyiv (3,037 cars), Volyn region (2,642 cars), Chernivtsi region (2,058 cars), and Zakarpattia region (1,137 cars), it said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the laws of Ukraine on amendments to the Tax and Customs Codes to introduce a reduced excise tax on passenger cars and increased control over the movement and use of cars with foreign registration plates became effective on November 25.

The legislation introduced basic excise rates depending on the type of the engine and its displacement.

Cars with foreign registration plates that have already been imported without taxation before the introduction of the said laws will be subject to a 0.5 coefficient to calculate the tax rate if customs clearance takes place within 90 days after the introduction of the new rules.
