European Parliament may stop construction of Nord Stream 2, second line of Turkish Stream – Kobolyev

There is a clear understanding that Nord Stream 2 is exclusively in the interest of Germany and unlikely in the interest of other EU countries, Kobolyev said.

CEO of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine Andriy Kobolyev has said the European Parliament chaired by Romania can make a decision that will stop the construction of the second line of the Turkish Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.

"If the European Parliament is able to vote on the application of the directive for offshore gas pipelines, there is a high probability that there will be neither the second line of the Turkish Stream nor Nord Stream 2," he said at a press conference.

"We are cautiously optimistic about the fact that Romania, which currently holds the presidency, may consider the issue. I have repeatedly talked with European parliamentarians. There is a clear understanding that Nord Stream 2 is exclusively in the interest of Germany and unlikely in the interest of other EU countries. Therefore, I believe, if the issue is raised in the European Parliament, there is a possibility of a positive decision for us," Kobolyev added.

UNIAN memo. The Nord Stream 2 project envisages the construction and operation of two gas pipeline branches with a total throughput capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year from the coast of Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany. It should connect Russia's Ust-Luga and Germany's Greifswald.

This new pipeline bypassing Ukraine is to be built next to the existing Nord Stream 1 pipeline. The construction of the pipeline should be completed before the end of 2019. The length of the pipeline will be 1,220 km.

The project is being implemented by Russia's Gazprom in alliance with European companies – ENGIE, Uniper, OMV, Shell, and Wintershall.

Ukraine stands against the construction of Nord Stream 2 as it will most likely lose its status of a gas transit country and its possible revenue losses are estimated at billions of U.S. dollars. The project is also highly criticized by Poland and the Baltic countries.

The United States remains in opposition to the Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream gas pipeline projects bypassing Ukraine.

The TurkStream will deliver Russian natural gas across the Black Sea to Turkey and then onto Europe.

Gazprom began construction of the offshore section of the Turkish Stream in May 2017. The Turkish Stream project envisages the construction of two pipelines, each 939 kilometers long.

The first line will be designed for the Turkish market and will meet 35 percent of Turkey's natural gas consumption alone. The second is for gas supply to countries in southern and southeastern Europe. The capacity of each line is 15.75 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The first deliveries are scheduled for the end of 2019.

The progress on the construction of the second line will depend on from where Russian natural gas will enter Europe, the relevant natural gas agreements to be signed and the route. Two lines will have a total throughput capacity of 31.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The first stream of gas is expected to flow through the pipeline in December 2019.
