Ukraine-EU-Russia talks on gas transit expected in Brussels Jan 21

The EU Delegation to Ukraine says the 2nd round of tripartite talks between Ukraine, the European Union, and Russia on the transit of Russian gas via Ukraine to the European Union after 2019 will take place in Brussels on Monday, January 21.

In particular, the meeting will be held with the participation of Vice President of the European Commission, Commissioner for Energy Community Maros Sefcovic. Ukraine will be represented by Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin and CEO of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine Andriy Kobolyev. Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak and Deputy Chairman-Mgmt Board at Gazprom PJSC Alexander Medvedev are expected to represent the Russian side, the EU Delegation told UNIAN.

The first ministerial meeting on the issue took place on July 17, 2018, it said. Following this, meetings were held at the expert level in the second half of last year. Monday's discussions will be based on expert meetings. Their participants will focus on key parameters agreed upon in Berlin, in particular, on an acceptable regulatory framework, as well as the volume, duration of supplies, as well as tariffs. The trilateral meeting will begin at 16:00 Kyiv time.

As UNIAN reported earlier, preliminary technical tripartite consultations with the participation of Ukraine, Russia and the European Commission regarding the future transit of gas through Ukraine were to be held on January 15. The same day, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine for European Integration Olena Zerkal said representatives of Russia's energy giant Gazprom disrupted the scheduled meeting.

On January 9, European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic said that the next round of tripartite talks with Russia and Ukraine on the long-term transit of Russian gas to the EU via Ukraine would be held in Brussels on January 21, 2019.

On January 10, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin spoke of Ukraine's position that the delegation would defend in tripartite gas talks regarding the future transit of gas via Ukraine. The Foreign Minister stressed that the future transit of Russian gas to Europe should be carried out based on European norms and rules.
