Nord Stream 2 is the second gas pipeline, which is supposed to connect Russia with Germany along the Baltic Sea bottom. The line will be 1,220 km long with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The cost of the project is EUR 9.5 billion. Its financing is shared in half by Gazprom and five European companies. The construction of the gas pipeline is to have been completed by the end of 2019.

Germany, Finland, and Sweden allowed laying the pipeline through their territory, while Denmark objected. Thus, the project operator proposed to lay the pipe bypassing Denmark.

The governments of Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia consider Nord Stream 2 a project, which is imposing a threat to Europe's energy security.
