Price of "meat basket" in Ukraine grows by 11% in 2018

The basket includes one kg of chicken fillet and carcass, pork, beef, and first-grade cooked sausage each.

Director of the Ukrainian Association of Retail Suppliers Oleksiy Doroshenko says the price of the so-called "meat basket" in Ukraine in 2018 increased by 11% against 2017, to UAH 575 (US$20.67).

"The meat basket in 2018 went up in price by 11%, or UAH 57 [$2.05]. Its price by the end of last year was UAH 575, whereas it was UAH 518 [$18.62] in late 2017," he wrote on Facebook on January 28.

The basket consists of one kilogram of chicken fillet and carcass, pork, beef, and first-grade cooked sausage each, he said.

Thus, the price of one kilogram of chicken fillet in 2018 grew by 18%, or UAH 16 ($0.58), to UAH 105 ($3.77) per kg; the price of beef increased by 12%, or UAH 14 ($0.50), to UAH 128 ($4.60) per kg; cooked sausage went up in price by 12%, or UAH 10 ($0.36), to UAH 93 ($3.34) per kg. The price of lard increased by 10%, or UAH 7 ($0.25), to UAH 76 ($2.73) per kg; that of chicken carcass rose by 7%, or UAH 4 ($0.14), to UAH 58 ($2.08) per kg and pork went up in price by 6%, or UAH 6 ($0.22), to UAH 115 ($4.13) per kg, according to calculations based on data from the State Statistics Service.

In addition, from March 1, 2018, to January 1, 2019, the price of the meat basket grew by 14%. At the same time, prices of all products grew over the 10 months: chicken fillet and sausage by 21%, beef by 14%, pork by 11%, lard and chicken carcass by 6%, according to the Association's alternative study.

As UNIAN reported earlier, inflation in Ukraine in December 2018 in annual terms – compared to December 2017 – stood at 9.8%, slowing from 13.7% in December 2017 year-over-year.
