First Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Kateryna Rozhkova says the regulator expects revenue from natural gas transit shipments via Ukraine to halve after the launch of gas pipelines bypassing the country.

"The launch of gas pipelines bypassing the country will reduce gas transit shipments. We have taken this into account, namely a reduction of almost by 50%, from 90 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas to 50 bcm. Hence, there will be a decrease in revenue," she said at a briefing on January 31.

Rozhkova says the proceeds from gas transit total US$3 billion per year now.

"A reduction in [gas] transit shipments almost by half will also reduce the revenue by nearly 50%," she added.

The current transit contract between Ukraine and Russia's gas giant Gazprom was concluded in 2009 for a period of 10 years. After it expires in 2020, the Russian monopolist plans to reduce gas transit supplies via Ukraine as much as possible.
