Ukrzaliznytsia ex-official detained in Boryspil airport for embezzlement of over US$3.3 mln

The detainee and seven other persons are defendants in criminal proceedings for the procurement of track switching equipment at hiked prices.

The National Anti-corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) says law enforcers at Boryspil International Airport have detained the former first deputy head of the branch "Center for Production" of Ukrainian national railways company PJSC Ukrzaliznytsia, who is suspected of causing more than UAH 90 million (US$3.3 million) in damage to the state.

"NABU detectives suspect this person, along with another seven persons, of inflicting over UAH 93 million in damage to Ukrzaliznytsia due to the purchase of track switching equipment at inflated prices. At the time of the crime commission, the ex-official was an assistant to one of the member of parliament, who, according to investigators, was also involved in the corruption scheme," NABU said on its website on February 21.

The detectives in January 2019 served the Ukrzaliznytsia ex-official with charge papers for committing a crime under Part 3 of Article 27, Part 2 of Article 28 and Part 1 of Article 205 (sham business), as well as Part 2 and Part 3 of Article 27, and Part 5 of Article 191 (misappropriation, embezzlement or conversion or property by malversation) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Since the man has been hiding from the investigation, he was put on wanted list.

State Border Service officers detained the suspect and handed him over to NABU detectives for further investigation.
