Poroshenko predicts IT sector's share may increase to almost 7% of Ukraine's GDP

The president is convinced that the IT sector is a priority industry, ensuring Ukraine's competitive advantages in the world.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko predicts that in two years, the share of the IT sector may increase from 4% to 6.8% of Ukraine's GDP and the number of IT specialists may grow to 200,000 people.

"As late as in 2016, there were 100,000 specialists in the Ukrainian IT sector, who ensured the creation of a strong middle class. The middle class, which stands for democracy and freedom, and provides economic growth. In early 2019, there are as many as 161,000 such specialists. In two years, if there is an effective interaction and cooperation between the state and IT industry experts, there will be 200,000 such experts. Nowadays, the sector accounts for 4% of GDP. There is every reason to believe that, in two years, the share will grow to 6.8% of GDP," he said at a meeting with representatives of Ukraine's IT industry on February 26.

The head of state says he is sure that IT, as a priority sector, ensures the country's competitive strengths.

Poroshenko also added that it would be great if the sector worked for not only outsourcing, but also established creative businesses inside Ukraine. "I am sure that this can be done," he said.

The president says the state will continue introducing the high-speed broadband Internet across Ukraine. Moreover, it is preparing to launch 5G after 3G and 4G that have already been operating in the country.

As UNIAN reported, Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman earlier said that one of the main tasks set by the government is the creation of sustainable rules in the IT sector for its development.
