Director of Integrated Gas Division at NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine Andriy Favorov says the company has a backup plan to ensure uninterrupted gas supplies in case of difficulties with the prolongation of gas transit via Ukraine.

"We have a reserve plan to ensure reliability of gas supplies. We constantly cooperate with the technical department of [the state-run gas transport system operator] Ukrtransgaz to make sure that the Ukrainian gas transmission system [GTS] remains competitive, while the capacity of gas storages facilities is sufficient to take large volumes of gas," he said at the Ukrainian Energy Forum in Kyiv on February 27, responding to a question on gas transit via Ukraine.

According to Favorov, the plan provides for uninterrupted operation of the GTS. However, the details of such measures cannot be disclosed since other traders could take advantage of this situation, he added.

The official says Naftorgaz, as part of the plan, is working to enhance the ability to manage the GTS, and its flexibility.

"Now the issue is related to the value of this flexibility and capacity, which Ukraine can offer to the participants. And this is a difficult part of the negotiations, which I hope will be resolved soon," he said.

Favorov says it is extremely important for European consumers to know that the Ukrainian GTS is not only competitive, but also important for maintaining security of the entire European gas transmission network. Naftogaz sees itself as part of the European energy community. Therefore, it is ready to carry out all the procedures and take steps to this end, he added
