Ukraine sees 69% increase in sales of electric cars in first two months

Used cars accounted for the lion's share of new registrations.

Ukraine saw a 69% increase in sales of electric cars in January-February 2019 year-over-year, to 814 vehicles.

Used cars accounted for the lion's share of new registrations, numbering 741, the Ukrautoprom Association said.

The Nissan Leaf remained a leader on the Ukrainian market for electric cars, as 422 cars of this model now carry Ukrainian number plates. However, only 11 of the registered Nissan Leaf cars are new.

The second most popular model was the Tesla Model S make with 65 registered vehicles (2 new and 63 used cars).

The BMW i3 with 62 registered cars (12 new and 50 used cars) ranked third.

The Renault Zoe was the choice of 46 Ukrainians, making it fourth on the list. Only six Renault Zoe cars were new.

The last of the top five makes was the Fiat 500e. In the first two months this year, 35 cars of this model were registered in Ukraine.

Although the Jaguar I-Pace, a battery-electric crossover SUV, ranked eighth with 21 cars registered in Ukraine, all vehicles were new, making it a bestseller on the Ukrainian market of new electric cars.

As UNIAN reported earlier, sales of electric cars in Ukraine in 2018 doubled from 2017, to 5,300 vehicles.

The rise was mainly due to imports of used cars whose primary registrations in Ukraine grew by 83.5%.

At the same time, growth of demand for new electric vehicles was higher than that for used cars.
