National JSC Naftogaz of Ukraine paid UAH 136.5 billion, or US$5.05 billion, in taxes to Ukraine's national budget last year.
"Naftogaz in 2018 paid UAH 136.5 billion in taxes and dividends to the state budget, that is, these funds were transferred to the accounts of the State Treasury. Slightly less than half of these funds, UAH 56 billion, or $2.07 billion, was the result of our win in the Stockholm arbitration in the gas transit case [with Russia's Gazprom]," Executive Officer of the Naftogaz Group Yuriy Vitrenko wrote on Facebook.

According to him, if the company had not won the case, this amount should have been paid to the Russian company.
"If we had lost, and the arbitration court in Stockholm had not offset the respective sums in its rulings, Naftogaz would have paid the UAH 56 billion (US$2.1 billion) not to the State Treasury, but to Gazprom for consumed gas," he said.
Vitrenko also stressed that if it had not been for the win in Stockholm, Naftogaz would have paid Gazprom in 2018 additionally about US$1.8 billion for the consumed gas and about US$56 billion under the "take or pay" rule, which is about UAH 1.5 trillion.
In February 2018, the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce ordered Gazprom to pay nearly US$2.6 billion to Naftogaz over a contractual dispute over gas transit. The decision was meant to conclude a long legal battle, but Naftogaz says Gazprom has not complied with the ruling.
