Ukraine confirms record grain harvest at 70 mln tonnes

Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Volodymyr Topchiy says the State Statistics Service of Ukraine has confirmed the grain harvest in Ukraine in 2018 at 70 million tonnes.

"The final report of the State Statistics Service on 2018 harvest has confirmed we have beat a historical mark of grain production in terms of its post-processing weight at 70.057 million tonnes with a yield of 4.74 tonnes per hectare (ha). In addition, the figures, highest in history, of the gross harvest of maize, soybeans, sunflower, and sugar beets have been reported," he said as quoted by the ministry's press service.

In particular, according to the final data, 2018 wheat harvest was at 24.6 million tonnes with a yield of 3.73 tonnes per ha; maize – at 35.8 million tonnes with a yield of 7.84 tonnes per ha; soybeans – at 4.5 million tonnes with a yield of 2.58 tonnes per ha; and sunflower – at 14.2 million tonnes with a yield of 2.3 tonnes per ha.

As UNIAN reported earlier, referring to the State Statistics Service, Ukraine's yield of grains and leguminous crops in 2017 decreased by 7.3% compared with 2016, amounting to 61.3 million tonnes.

The latest historical record was set in 2016 when Ukrainian farmers harvested 66 million tonnes of grains, which was 5.9 million tonnes more than in 2015.

Ukraine started planting early spring grain and leguminous crops on March 4, according to the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry.
