Ukraine has lifted the ban on imports of cattle feed from Poland, which was introduced on February 15, 2019, because of an outbreak of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, a dangerous disease, registered in that country.

"On March 27, the ban on imports of fodder from Poland to Ukraine was lifted," the press service of the European Business Association (EBA) said in a statement on March 28.

The spongiform encephalopathy case was isolated and atypical, it said.

"According to the Terrestrial Animal Health Code adopted at the General Session of the World Organization for Animal Health [OIE], atypical cases of encephalopathy are not taken into account when determining the official risk status of a country. Therefore, the case did not affect the official risk status of Poland," the EBA said.

In addition, according to the OIE website, the Republic of Poland was identified as a country with a slight risk of the said disease. The information was also confirmed in a report by the Polish Chief Veterinary Officer.

At the same time, the ban on imports of feed from Poland was in force in Ukraine after it was introduced by Ukraine's chief state veterinary officer on February 15.

"Among the Association's member companies were importers of feed for unproductive animals. In fact, such imports were banned despite the fact that the companies had an international veterinary certificate issued by an authorized veterinary officer. And this certificate guarantees the quality and safety of produce. However, the businesses were unable to import it," the press service quoted EBA Food Committee Coordinator Oksana Zharkova as saying.

The ban imposed by Ukraine's chief state veterinary officer was later lifted.
